Harvey and his father, mother, brothers and sister moved from Hepler, Kansas to Lampasas, Texas in 1897; later moving to Kerrville, Texas. Harvey bought 80 acres of land on Bandera Hwy and Lee, his brother bought land in Center Point, Texas. Both started nurseries on their properties. Harvey married Margaret Bean on May 30, 1909. Harvey began creating hybrids of various plants especially pecan trees - grafting hybrid pecans onto sturdy native tree trunks. He became famous for his hybrid pecans. Harvey built the Mosty Nursery and Flower Shop which was located on the property where MG Building Materials is now located. They also built three homes on the property - one west of the Flower Shop, one south of the Flower Shop on the northeast bank of the Guadalupe and one behind the Flower Shop. Harvey was also one of the founders of the Garden of Memories cemetery, served many years on the Board of Education and was a Mason. Margaret was a member of the Eastern Star. She devoted her life to her family. Harvey died August 16, 1958 and Margaret died a year later on October 18, 1959. Both are buried in the Garden of Memories cemetery. |
